Kumbar Hao You Seafood
A trip to the beach isn’t just about playing in the sand since we’re by the sea, seafood is the order of the day. I’ve always wondered since seafood is all about freshness wouldn’t a seafood eatery run by fisherman have the freshest seafood of them all ?
Fisherman are very picky when it comes to seafood, what would they serve but the freshest seafood ?
Have you ever had the pleasure of being seated by the beach smelling the salty sea air enjoying the view and the gentle caresses of the sea breeze while partaking a leisurely meal of the freshest possible seafood specially prepared by a family of fisherman ? Teluk kumbar seafood eatery promises all that and more.
Enjoy a meal of authentic seafood in the golden glow of the setting sun or under the starry night sky. This is a delightful dining experience not to be missed.
Patron: Having seafood by the sea, you can taste the flavour of seafood more keenly.
Patron: This place has the feel of an authentic fishing village instead of having seafood in an air-conditioned restaurant, this is what I prefer. The smell of sea and the breeze makes it perfect for seafood.
Steamed Mantis Shrimps, these fresh and lively mantis shrimps are served unadorned after being steamed for 5 minutes with no seasonings added. Despite the lack of garnishes it looks very appetising indeed. Steaming brings forth the natural sweetness of these mantis shrimps. This tantalizing dish is simply irresistible.
Patron: It’s very sweet, very fresh and juicy too. You can taste the meat better when it is steamed.
Steamed Crabs, a single look at these premium crabs bulging with roe is enough to make one’s mouth water. The golden orange crab roe is sinfully rich and creamy. Pearly white crab meat is firm and succulent and intoxicatingly sweet.
Patron: This is the best way to taste its natural flavours.
Herbal Clam Soup with Wine. Chinese herbs like wolfberries hold their own in this soup splashed with rich aromatic rice wine, both lending the clams a distinctive taste of delight. The natural sweetness of clams shines through the heady flavours of this herb and wine concoction.
Patron: The soup is rich in the taste of clams, it’s very fresh and appetizing.
I’ve never seen a family as large as this. These people lined up behind me are not here for a beauty pageant contest. They are all relatives of the proprietor.
Axian: Some of your relatives are fisherman, aren’t they ?
Restaurant’s Owner: My dad and my second aunt’s husband.
Axian: How long have you been fisherman ?
Restaurant’s Owner: I’ve been one for over 40 years.
The proprietor was previously a chef for more than 20 years. In 1997, they concerted their residence into this seafood eatery and recruited family members to help out in order to bring the family together as a unit.
They are likes fishes which can’t live without water. The offspring of these fisherman are so attached to the sea, they have chosen the seaside to open their seafood eatery.
The proprietor’s family originally settled by the sea for the convenience of fishing, opening an eatery at the very same spot tells of the deep bond they have forged with the sea.
Patron: This eatery has been around for over a decade, we’ve been coming here since my child was little. My child is now 15.
According to the boss catching these mantis shrimps can rather dangerous as they are extremely aggressive. Their claws are similar to those of a praying mantis. These claws are lined with sharp barbs that can inflict a great deal of pain.
If we were to vote for the ugliest looking shrimps, mantis shrimps will definitely top the list. Just look at how ugly it is. It resembles a praying mantis. Quite scary actually.
Axian: I wonder if its ugliness is why it wasn’t eaten in the past. People didn’t use to eat this, right ?
Patron: Back in my time, no one eats mantis shrimps.
People are apprehensive of its unusual appearance. Also eating mantis shrimps can be quite a challenge. You might cut your finger if you’re not experienced. Despite their unattractive appearances, these shrimps are deliciously sweet and tender.
5 minutes in the steam oven and these shrimps turn a tantalizing shade of orange with luscious meat within that whets the appetite. Mantis shrimps are cooked and served as they are with no seasonings or garnishes added. This will bring forth their natural flavours and sweetness.
When it comes to seafood, steaming and blanching are the best ways of cooking to preserve natural flavours.
Axian: I’ve always wondered why such sweet and delicious tasting mantis shrimps are so crudely known as “pissing shrimps” ? Why the name “pissing shrimp”?
Restaurant’s Owner: When mantis shrimps feel threatened, they’ll pass urine just like an infant and thus the name “pissing shrimps”.
Being a former fisherman, the owner knows his seafood. He can tell with a glance, how fresh the seafood is. The seafoods served here are all caught by local fisherman which is why the fish, prawns and crabs are all very fresh. This eatery has the advantage of being near the sea, their seafood need not be transported over long distances.
Teluk Kumbar Hao You Seafood is located in Teluk Kumbar, a far-flung village along the coast. Despite its remoteness, patrons flock to this eatery from afar. Their forefathers were fisherman, now they run a seafood eatery. This family of fisherman may have kept away their nets and entered the kitchen but despite the change in their roles, they remain dedicated to providing people with the freshest possible seafood.
